26/03/03 - Report on involvement by individuals and groups in the referenda on abortion and the Nice Treaty and the Dáil general election

Summary

The following is a summary of the position relating to those groups and individuals who were active during the referendum on abortion campaign:

  • one group, Pro-Life Campaign (A1), registered with the Standards Commission of its own volition before the launch of the abortion referendum campaign;
  • a second group, Abortion Reform (A8), registered of its own volition almost two months after the referendum;
  • two groups, Pro-Life Movement (A2) and the Irish Family Planning Association (A3), registered with the Standards Commission after it was brought to their attention by the Standards Commission that they may be covered by the legislation;
  • another group, Ireland for Life (A11), changed its name to Éire ar son na Beatha and registered with the Standards Commission, following an exchange of correspondence, after it was brought to its attention by the Standards Commission that it may be covered by the legislation;
  • Pro-Life Alliance (A6), also registered with the Standards Commission, following an exchange of correspondence, after it was brought to its attention by the Standards Commission that it may be covered by the legislation;
  • ten groups or individuals are not required to register as third parties as the provisions of the legislation do not apply to them, viz., Mother and Child Campaign (A5), Youth Defence (A7), Family Solidarity (A9), Maynooth Life Society (A10), European Life Network (Ireland) (A12), Human Life International (A13), Neart (A14), Ms. Nora Bennis (A15), Mrs. Dana Rosemary Scallan (A17) and Alliance for all Life (A18);
  • the following two groups have not replied to correspondence from the Standards Commission:

  • in relation to Alliance for a No Vote (A4), the Standards Commission is in correspondence with An Post with a view to obtaining the name and address of the subscriber to the PO Box Number. Being outside the jurisdiction, in the event that a reply to correspondence is not received, there is no further action the Standards Commission can take in the case of SPUC (UK).
