Donations disclosed by TDs, Senators and MEPs for 2002

Part 7. Foreign donations

The legislation provides that a donation, of any value, may not be accepted by a TD, Senator or MEP from an individual, other than an Irish citizen, who resides outside the island of Ireland, or from a body corporate or unincorporated body of persons which does not have an office in the island of Ireland from which one or more of its principal activities is directed.

It was noted from a small number of Donation Statements furnished to the Standards Commission that donations had been received from non-resident persons or companies. In some cases it was evident from the Donation Statements that the individual donor was an Irish citizen or, in the case of a body corporate or unincorporated body of persons, that there was an office in the island of Ireland from which activities of the body were directed. In other cases, however, the Standards Commission was required to seek confirmation that the TD, Senator or MEP was entitled to accept the donation from the donor in question.

The Standards Commission is satisfied that none of the TDs, Senators or MEPs who disclosed donations from non-resident persons were prohibited from accepting the donations.
