Press Release re donations disclosed by TDs, Senators and MEPs for 2009

TDs, Senators, MEPs and former MEPs disclosed donations with a total value of €182,438 for 2009 according to figures published today by the Standards Commission. The donations included money and use of property or services. Only donations valued at more than €634.87 require to be disclosed. If the same donor makes more than one donation to the same TD, Senator or MEP during a calendar year, the values of the donations must be aggregated and disclosure made if the total is greater than €634.87.
242 Donation Statements were received for 2009. This total comprised 165 Donation Statements from TDs, 59 from Senators, 12 from MEPs and 6 from former MEPs. 14 TDs disclosed donations with a total value of €68,619.24 while six Senators disclosed a total of €23,425. Donations with a total value of €28,963.66 were disclosed by 3 former MEPs and donations with a total value of €61,429.67 were disclosed by 8 MEPs. The total of donations disclosed was €182,437.57.
TDs, Senators and MEPs are prohibited from accepting foreign donations or from accepting anonymous donations exceeding a value of €126.97. They are also prohibited from accepting donations with a total value exceeding €2,539.48 from the same person in the same year. A refund of €2,500 was made to a donor by Mr. Proinsias de Rossa as the donation received exceeded the maximum prescribed limit.
On 8 January 2010 the Standards Commission wrote to all 242 Members enclosing a Donation Statement/Statutory Declaration form for completion and return by 31 January 2010. A reminder letter issued on 8 February 2010 to 10 people who, at that stage, had failed to return the statutory documentation advising them that the Commission had decided that the matter would be referred to the Director for Public Prosecutions if the completed documentation was not received by Monday 22 February 2010. On 23 February 2010 the remaining three outstanding Members (Mr Michael Lowry,TD; Senators Mark Daly and John Ellis) were referred to the Gardaí/DPP. Senator John Ellis submitted the required documentation on 26 February 2010; Senator Mark Daly did so on 2 March 2010. Deputy Lowry submitted the documentation on 15 March 2010. The Gardaí/DPP have been advised of the receipt by the Commission of the required documentation. The Standards Commission's report is available on its website.
