Ms. Emily O'Reilly, Ombudsman.

Ms. Emily O'Reilly was appointed Ireland's Ombudsman and Information Commissioner on 1 June 2003 by the President of Ireland, Mrs. Mary McAleese, on the nomination of both Houses of the Oireachtas (Parliament). Prior to her appointment, Ms. O'Reilly was a journalist and author and had been a political correspondent for various media since 1989.
Ms. O'Reilly has been a member of the Standards in Public Office Commission since the date of her appointment as Ombudsman and is a member of the Commission for Public Service Appointments since its establishment on 19 October 2004. She also serves as a member of the Constituency Commission and the Referendum Commission which are established by Ministerial order.
Ms. O'Reilly is a native of Tullamore, Co. Offaly, and is married with five children. She was educated at University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin. She was also the recipient of a Nieman Fellowship in Journalism at Harvard University, Cambridge, U.S.A.
