Mr. Justice Matthew P. Smith, Chairman.

Mr. Justice Smith is the first Chairman of the Standards in Public Office Commission having been appointed in December 2001 by the President, on the advice of the Government, following resolutions passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas (Parliament).  Mr. Justice Smith was re-appointed as Chairman for a second term on 21 December 2007.

Mr. Justice Smith was educated at Christian Brothers Primary School, Kells, County Meath, at Rockwell Secondary School, Cashel, County Tipperary and at University College Dublin. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree and an LLB First Class Honours Degree.

He was called to the Irish Bar in 1957 and to the Inner Bar in 1982.

He was appointed a Judge of the Circuit Court in January 1985 and a Judge of the Special Criminal Court in July 1988 where he served until June 1998.

He was a Judge of the High Court from January 1998 to 31 December 2004.

Mr. Justice Smith was appointed Chairman of the Electronic Voting Commission on 1 March 2004 and is a member of the Commission for Public Service Appointments since its establishment on 19 October 2004.
